How to avoid plagiarism?

  1. Paraphrase + cite:
Restate another person’s ideas in your own words and cite the source properly.
Use when you wish to refer to sentences or ideas in the source text

  2. Direct quote + cite:

Quote another person’s words without any changing using quotation marks and cite the source properly.
Used for a definition, theory, law, a specific term or a powerful statement.

  1. References List
Include all the sources cited in the work in references using a standard citation style.

Some strategies to paraphrase

  1. Completely understand the idea of the passage before paraphrasing.

  2. Use synonyms for all words that are not generic. Words like world, food, or science are generic so that there is no need to find a synonym.

  3. Change the structure of the sentence.

  4. Change the voice from active to passive and vice versa.

  5. Change clauses to phrases and vice versa.

  6. Change parts of speech.
